Abukuma-do Cave, located in Takine-cho, Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture, offers an unusual menu using wine in addition to Fukushima Prefecture’s famous “Sauce Katsudon,” a bowl of rice topped with pork cutlet. This time we will introduce you to the exquisite gourmet food at Rest House Busan, a restaurant in Abukuma-do Cave.

What is Abukuma-do Cave?

Abukuma-do Cave is a limestone cave in Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture, located in the Abukuma Kogen Chubu Prefectural Natural Park. The cave has a total length of more than 4,000 meters, and the average temperature in the cave is 15 degrees Celsius, which is stable throughout the year. Taking advantage of this environment, wine is stored in the caves.

There are two different routes to visit the caves: a general course and an exploration course. Route A is the route that can be visited without preparation for water. In addition to the Abukuma-do Cave tour route, visitors can also enjoy Irimizu limestone cave, Fureai-kan (a facility where visitors can stay overnight), and the Hoshi-no-Mura Observatory.

Rest House Kamayama

Rest House Kamayama is a restaurant attached to Abukuma-do Cave. The restaurant features local products from Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture, as well as delicious Fukushima delicacies such as locally grown egoma (Perilla) and eel.

Jyu-nen (means 10 years longer life, local name of perilla) Cold Udon noodle is made with egoma, a specialty of Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture. The udon noodles, dipped in a miso sauce from egoma, would fill your mouth with the flavor of egoma. The “Wine Salt Ramen” uses wine salt made from “Takine Hokujyun,” a wine stored in Abukuma-do, and the wine and ramen go well together.

In addition to udon and ramen, there are also rice dishes available, such as Fukushima Prefecture’s famous sauced pork cutlet rice bowl and Fuku-una rice bowl made with locally produced eel and rice.
