Capybara, the most popular healer
The popular capybara, who is also the official character of Nagasaki Bio Park as “Kapitan,” can be found in the “Capybara Pond and Capuchin Island. Capybaras are a group of rodents that grow to over 1 meter in length, but since they are allowed to roam free in Nagasaki BioPark, they are friendly and will approach you for food and interaction. They are a rapidly gaining popularity for their cute, soothing behavior as they beg for food, which they love, and for the way they close their eyes when you pet them.
In winter, you can see them in their famous open-air baths and warming themselves on the stove, which makes you feel warm and fuzzy. At Nagasaki Bio Park, you can also enjoy watching capybaras being bathed in a hot spring, warming themselves together with capybaras in a wood-burning stove, or warming themselves together with capybaras in an open-air bath by taking a hand bath.
The capybara exhibit area is basically closed to preschool children to prevent danger, but there is a “capybara viewing corner for children” where visitors can observe the capybaras inside a fence.
