Do you know where the birthplace of dairy farming in Japan is? Rakuno-no-Sato (Minami-boso, Chiba)

Do you know where dairy farming, i.e., milking cows and goats and processing the milk to produce dairy products, first started in Japan?

It is said to have originated in the Edo period when Yoshimune Tokugawa, the 8th Tokugawa shogun, imported three white cows in 1727 and began raising them on a farm in Mineoka, Awa no Sato (current Chiba Prefecture).

The birthplace of the dairy is believed to be current Minami-Boso area, and is designated as a “Chiba Prefecture Historic Site”.

Goats roam free in the vast pastureland, allowing visitors to experience a dairy farm (grazing pasture) up close.

In addition to this dairy square with goats, there is also a museum and a barn where visitors can learn about the origins of dairy culture.

The dairy has a creek, and during the warm season, it is crowded with parents and children who enjoy playing in the river.

We were even able to catch dragonfly larvae called “Yago”. The current is calm and the water level is up to the ankles of children, so it is safe to let them play.
The water is calm and the volume is about the same as a child’s ankles.

What is the cow on the left holding? Milk curd? Udon noodles? Oshiruko…

On Children’s Day, the sky is decorated with many carp streamers.
