Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum (Koganei, Tokyo)

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum is located in Koganei Park and is a museum that exhibits historical buildings of old Tokyo (Edo period) that have been relocated and preserved.

It is said that “Spirited Away” from the Ghibli movie “Spirited Away” was used as a reference for the design of the public bathhouse and the downtown merchant house architecture in the Edo-Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum. The symbolic character “Edomaru” was designed by Hayao Miyazaki.

The park is divided into three zones: the West Zone features private homes and mansions of various architectural styles, the Center Zone features historical buildings, and the East Zone is a recreation of a downtown area with merchant houses.

Visitors can tour stores and farmhouses that they have only seen in movies and TV dramas, and riding on the streetcars that actually ran in the past will make them feel as if they have stepped back in time! Even if you don’t know much about history, you can experience the lifestyle of the past and enjoy it for adults and children alike.
