Kyushu Nearshore Zone

Kyushu is surrounded by four seas: the East China Sea, the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan, and the Seto Inland Sea, and all prefectures face the sea. At Marine World Umino-Nakamichi, the distinctive seas of each area of Kyushu are reproduced in tanks, allowing visitors to feel “another Kyushu in the water.

●Genkainada Tank
The Genkainada Tank is the symbol of the 2017 renewal. The fish are not the stars of this 5-meter-high tank, which curves greatly toward the ceiling, but rather the raging waves of the Genkainada Sea. Every few minutes, waves and air bubbles periodically erupt, which can cause visitors to exclaim, “Oh, wow! and “Oh, wow!” are the cheers that go up every few minutes. You will feel as if you were a fish drifting on the Tsushima Current, along with the kuei and spiny dogfish on display.

●Hakata Bay, Fukuoka
Hakata Bay, separated by a line connecting the Itoshima Peninsula and Uminonakamichi, is a calm bay that is a stark contrast to the rough Genkainada Sea. Here, eelgrass grows thickly, fish, shrimp, and squid spawn, and horseshoe crabs and rare birds can be seen on the mudflats, making it a rich sea where a diverse ecosystem coexists. This zone allows visitors to learn about the nature of Hakata Bay, a familiar sea to Fukuoka citizens.

●Saga Squid Tank
Squid is one of the representative marine products of Kyushu. Visitors can see translucent, transparent bluefin reef squid and beautiful cuttlefish swimming leisurely in this tank.
●Kagoshima Kinko Bay Tank
Kinko Bay is located between the Satsuma and Osumi Peninsulas in Kagoshima Prefecture. The depth of the bay is 200 meters despite being an inland sea, which is rare even in the world. The exhibits include whiptail pine trees growing in clusters on a steep slope and a large school of red rockfish, which can only be seen in Kinko Bay.
●Nagasaki Saikai Tank
Here visitors can see wild fish that live against the currents in the fierce tidal currents of the Nagasaki West Sea, such as rock lobsters, sea perch, catsharks, and lionfish.
●Miyazaki Coastal Tank
The Miyazaki Nichinan Coast has beautiful sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. The tank exhibits the giant flatfish and flathead flounder that inhabit this area.
●Ariake Sea Tank, Saga
The Ariake Sea faces the four prefectures of Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki and Kumamoto. This zone features a reproduction of a tidal flat, where visitors can see the unique creatures of the sea, such as the mudflats, the blue-spotted mudflats, the Yamato leather crabs, and the flying gudgeon.
●Kyushu Sea Turtle Zone
The loggerhead turtle, for which southern Kyushu is a major spawning ground, and other sea turtles from the waters around Kyushu are on display.
