Tokyo Fire Department headquarters & Citizen disaster prevention education center (Honjyo, Sumida, Tokyo)

Every year, Japan is struck by a disaster somewhere in the country, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake or a typhoon. Many of us are becoming more aware of disaster prevention against such disasters than ever before.
This time, we visited the Honjo Disaster Prevention Center in Sumida-ku, Tokyo.

The Honjo Disaster Prevention Hall is a hands-on learning space where visitors can enhance their knowledge and ability to take action against disasters by experiencing simulated disasters such as earthquakes, smoke, fire, and rainstorms. The museum has an open-air tour area and a hands-on corner, where visitors can take a tour led by an instructor. If you would like to experience the Honjo Disaster Prevention Museum, you can participate in the tour with an instructor.
Participation times are fixed, so please check the website.

In the earthquake experience, visitors can experience 10 levels of seismic intensity, from 0 to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, and 7, as well as simulated earthquakes that actually occurred, such as the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake, and Great Kanto Earthquake. In the fire extinguishing experience, visitors can learn how to use a fire extinguisher by using a “mock fire extinguisher” that emits water for training purposes.

Do you know how to call a fire truck or ambulance from your cell phone?
At the Honjo Disaster Prevention Museum, there is a booth where you can actually experience how to call 119. You do not have to participate in the tour to experience this. Other exhibits, such as a photo exhibition, can be viewed at your leisure.
