Ichikawa City Zoo (Ichikawa, Chiba)

This is a municipal animal park in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture. In addition to the zoo, there is also a botanical garden and a rose garden, so it would take a whole day to visit all of them. The zoo may look and feel local, but the exhibits are well worth seeing!

The zoo was opened in 1986 when a male red panda Shin Shin and a female Sei Sei were donated from Ichikawa’s friendship city, Leshan in China’s Sichuan Province. The park seems to place great importance on interaction, and visitors can interact with the animals in the “Nakayoshi Hiroba (Friendship Square)”. (There are some restrictions.)

The museum manages and keeps 365 animals of about 48 species, mainly small animals such as meerkats and red pandas, and is especially famous for its otter exhibit, which is called “Nagashi Kawauso” (meaning “flowing otter” in Japanese).

At the back of the Ichikawa City Zoo, there is a mini-train-field, playground equipment, and a rest area. In addition to interacting with the animals, playing on the playground equipment doubles the fun of this place.
