Lockhart Castle, located in Takayama-mura, Agatsuma-gun, Gunma Prefecture, is Japan’s first relocated and restored old European castle, and is a very popular tourist spot that attracts people from all over Japan and the world. It is now known as a filming location for TV dramas, a venue for video game and anime events, and a transit point for (travel) tours, and will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2023.
The stone church, gallery store, restaurant, and courtyard recreate the atmosphere of a medieval town, making it a rare facility where visitors can experience Western culture in Japan. It is possible to hold a wedding ceremony in such a romantic atmosphere, and more than 2,500 couples have been married here. Not only the wedding ceremony, but also the reception can be held here.
It is operated by Sampou Corporation, a stone company in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture. When Sampou started as a stone theme park, the castle did not exist yet. As time went by, the castle was built and the garden was added, and the park was westernized little by little.
I was surprised when I entered the museum! It is very solemn. The area where you can enter the museum is also open for photography, so you can take pictures of the antique furniture and goods and leave them as a memory.
Another attraction of Lockhart Castle is cosplay. Although it is not allowed to enter the castle wearing cosplay or wedding dress, you can bring your own (by paying a fee), but you can choose from hundreds of beautiful dresses and have them fitted inside the Lockhart Castle.
