Toba Aquarium (Toba, Mie)

Japan’s largest number of birds kept in captivity!

In May 2013, Toba Aquarium celebrated its 58th anniversary. The number of species kept at the aquarium has increased every year since its opening to approximately 1,200, making it the top aquarium among Japanese aquariums that are members of the Japan Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
The 12 zones of Toba Aquarium are free passages. There are no viewing corridors, so families can enjoy the aquarium from any direction. Children can go and see the sea and water creatures at their leisure! It is also recommended to see a variety of fish while timing your visit to one of the event shows.

It is now the only aquarium in Japan where visitors can see sea otters!

On January 4, 2025, a sea otter kept in Fukuoka Prefecture died, making Toba Aquarium the only 1 aquarium in Japan where visitors can see sea otters. After March 17, 2025, the number and duration of tours for otters will be limited due to expected crowding. From now on, tours will be divided into groups of 10 people each, and the duration of the tour will be “one minute”.The “meal time” three times a day will be conducted in the same way as before.
