Hakone-en Aquarium (Hakone, Kanagawa)

The highest elevation seawater aquarium in Japan, “Kaisuikan”

Located 723 meters above sea level, the Hakone-en Aquarium’s seawater pavilion is the highest elevation seawater aquarium in Japan.
The 7-meter-high large tank in the center of the aquarium is bathed in sparkling natural light, providing a spectacular view of fish from under the sea. Here, visitors can enjoy the mysterious sight of fish swimming in brackish mangroves and coral reefs growing in the seawater. The Hakone-en Aquarium uses a special type of water called “suitable environment water,” which allows visitors to see fish that do not live together in the wild swimming together. The difference between freshwater and saltwater fish may not be obvious to children, but the sunken ship lying quietly in the large tank and the atmosphere of a different space that does not exist in nature will completely captivate both adults and children.
There are many other aquariums in the Sea Water Pavilion that make the most of the unique characteristics of the fish. A fantastic sight can be seen in the bridge tank, where a large school of Japanese eagles swim above the passageway. Stingrays and other fish sometimes blend in at the bridge tank, and it is a great experience to see fish that are different from those swimming in the large tank. Sharks that swim in interesting ways, a tank with tuna, a tank with four kinds of cute penguins, and a tank with large crabs and lobsters are also popular among children.
